Fall 2005

Jackie Harris extracting antioxidants

This fall we purchased and distributed 10 cultivars of garlic for the 11 grower participants. We collected data (bulb weight, number of cloves, clove size, bulb circumference) for each of the 10 cultivars. We freeze dried garlic samples for each cultivar and we've recently completed some preliminary antioxidant assays. There were differences in antioxidant levels among the varieties. It will be particularly interesting to see if these differences will be apparent in next years' harvests. Most of the soil tests have been completed.

We're looking forward to seeing the harvests next summer! - Gayle
